Costume Party for a Preschooler

So our Little Man just turned 4. Can you believe it?

He went back and forth for a week trying to decide a theme for a little birthday party: Superheros? Cowboys? Pirates? So I threw out the idea of having a costume party in which he could ‘be’ whatever he wanted to be on the day of the party. And so it began…

I like to keep things simple. So we had it in our back yard.

We thought it would be fun to have costume pieces displayed for adults and kids to try on. We bought about 10 items at the local party supply store as well as the dollar store. These also served as the party favors, as the kids got to choose something to bring home when they left.

I had picked up a empty pallet to use for a future craft project and we used that to display all the costume pieces.

We asked that kids and adults alike feel free to come in any sort of costume they like. The results were so much fun!

And who can resist putting a mustache on a baby, I mean come on.

We had Little Man’s favorite Pumpkin Muffins with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing topped with compass rings (picked up at the dollar store) and a big fruit salad as snacks (the party was at 10:00am).

We played one game. I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out but it was really fun and the kids loved it! We called it Pin the Costume on the Kiddo (except we used his real name which we don’t do here on the blog.) I took a picture of him and had an engineer print made at Staples for $5.00. We spent one morning printing off big accessories and costume pieces and coloring them. Then at the party the kids took turns being blind folded and guessing where different pieces went, like Pin the Tail on the Donkey.

Little Man had so much fun that at the end of the day he asked, “So Mom, when is my next birthday?”

This year was really fun because he was able to make all the choices and get really excited about his party.  We even wrote thank you cards together, which he scripted and I wrote out for him, and he signed his name himself at the bottom.  He is getting so BIG!

Happy 4th Birthday to my big Little Man 🙂

Little Man the Male Model

Am I the only mom of boys that enjoys pulling out the new season of clothes and seeing what cute outfits I can put together for my little guy?

Recently, I did just that. And I happened to mention to Little Man that I needed some pictures of him in his cool Fall outfit. He promptly (and surprisingly to me) got very excited about this. So we headed out to find a fun spot to shoot and below is a collage of some of the pictures taken. Please so enjoy…we sure did!

Can I just make sure you realize that every single one of these photos (granted minus the one of him sitting because boys never do that by choice) were solely inspired by Little Man himself.  There are about 40 that I ended up keeping from our time because they are just so stinking hilarious.  A different face and pose for every one.  Hubby and I got a good laugh looking at them all.  Our son…he is a character.  And we sure do love him to pieces!

P.S.  Isn’t he so big??

We got “Booed!”

This last week we received a fun surprise on our front porch. Around 7:30pm, a little guy in a cape knocked on our front door, left a trick-or-treat pumpkin filled with goodies on our door mat, and ran off. (We still haven’t figured out who it was! Was it YOU?!?)

Hubby saw the little guy run away. Little Man was SO excited to go through this surprise package, which consisted of a coffee mug, packets of apple cider mix, candy, a funny pair of disguise glasses for kiddos, a Halloween candle, and more! Quite the gift, huh?

The idea is that when you get ‘Booed’, you make copies of the sheet that came with it and pass it on to two other people within 24 hours. So the next day, Little Man and I headed to the store to buy some goodies of our own to put together two of our own Halloween baskets of goodies.  He had a blast picking out things to give to our friends.  That night we headed out fully disguised, to deliver our own Boo’s.  I’m pretty sure no one recognized the delivery man:

It was just too much fun watching my son learn how to sneak around…(something about that statement seems very wrong).  Don’t worry.  We gave him context, about how it was to be a surprise and all.  He was still a bit confused I think, but SO excited nonetheless.

This is such a fun way to interact with your neighbors, even if they don’t have children.  You could bake a yummy dessert and leave it as a Boo for a family with older children or a home without children.  The possibilities are endless really.

Want to Boo someone you know?  Visit this site to print off the sheets to leave with your gifts and get creative:

Have fun!  And then come back and share your creativity if you decide to do this yourself!

A Tree House for the kiddos AKA Hubby’s Dream Come True

As many of you know, Little Man is not characterized as being a boy that plays with toys. He would rather be in the kitchen helping Mommy make bread or helping Daddy in the shop than play with any toy any time of any day of his little life.

BUT there is one thing he does love. Parks and play sets, or “Park Slides” as he calls them. So for his birthday, we asked friends and family who wanted to give a gift to instead drop a few dollars towards his backyard swing set fund. One family even gave us a amazing yellow slide they had that someone had given them that they were not going to use. So all we needed was for Hubby to have a free weekend 🙂

See, we have this incredible old tree in our tiny back yard. When we first looked at the house, it was the first thing we noticed about the back yard. I believe my husband, in all his adult glory, said, “That would make an amazing tree house…!”

And so the dream began… and today, this is what you will see in our backyard:

The bottom tier of the tree house was fully funded by Little Man’s B-day and a generous and eager-to-help-build-a-tree-house-Papa-Robinson 🙂  It is complete.  The top tier is a just a frame right now…which I am thankful for…because its a little too high for my comfort.  In a year or two I think I will feel better about it…wait, then I will have a 1 or 2 year old too…Does the mother worry ever end?

Little Man LOVES his tree house.  Hubby may love it more.  The day after the bottom was complete, he spent the morning before work reading books to Little Man…in the tree house.  He spent his down time at work dreaming up ‘additions’ to the tree house such as water canon’s that involve a lot of engineering, zip lines, and the like.  And he spent the afternoon and evening playing in the tree house, yes WITH Little Man, using binoculars to spy out animals in the surrounding foliage.

I  love my little family.

Just call us the Swiss Family Robinson 🙂

School for Little Man…kinda

So…now that I am feeling like a normal human being, I am feeling overly ambitious in my daily to-do list.

In the early spring I started the task of teaching little man his letters…then I got pregnant. And everything got put on hold for a very long time.

Lately, some of his older friends have returned to school for the year and it has peaked his curiosity!

So NOW we are resuming sed teaching and actually starting over at the beginning. So I thought it would be fun to share what we are doing on here.  I love hearing what other moms with kiddos this age are doing with their children to expand their ever curious little minds.  And I can’t think of a better place to record what we actually did so in 20 years when my kids ask me what I did when they were little to teach them their letters I’ll be like, “Go look at the blog, I dunno!”  🙂

Every week or so (depending on Little Man’s interest and ability to catch on, our busy-ness, etc.) I plan on doing a different letter.

With each letter I think we will do a Letter Rhyme/Saying, Writing Lesson, Special Letter Project, A Corresponding Bible Verse and Coloring Page. I was thinking I could post our resources on here so if anyone else with little ones Little Man’s age wanted to use them they could.

Super simple, one thing a day, 10-15 min. a day, my kinda school 🙂

Keep an eye out for these posts if you are interested.  And mom friends with kiddos Little Man’s age, please share any ideas you have!

Little Man’s Big Boy Room- In transition…

Oh this room…why oh why does it have to have a horrible painted border…why oh why oh why.  Borders are my nemesis, of both painted and paper variations.  All because of that silly thing, eventually this whole room will have to be primed and painted along with both closet doors and all the trim.  But seeing as I am not up to that right now, I will pretend like it is not there.

Little Man started sleeping in a real big boy twin bed shortly after he began sleeping in his toddler bed.

Its the furniture from the guest bedroom that I painted remember?

A while back I made these curtains out of a brown flat sheet I bought from the good will and some cream colored linen remnant I found in the chest of fabric my parents bought me for a $1.00.  It came with two matching pillow shams…score!  One less sewing project for me 🙂

I really like the way they turned out.  The tabs and the texture at the bottom really make the curtain I think.  I just sewed straight lines across the bottom piece every couple inches to get the look.

The bed spread is actually my super old (and super PINK) comforter from when I was young and even from my college years!

(I can’t quite figure out how to make the bed well with that bed rail there…tricky)

I made a duvet cover for it by sewing together a white and a striped twin sheet and putting buttons and button holes along one end, kind of like a giant pillow case that buttons closed.

The brown in the duvet matches the curtains so perfectly, you’d think they were made for each other!

The rest of the room is a compilation of furniture from other rooms, while our upstairs in in transition.  His little toddler bed sits lonelyly in the corner and is used now only as a trampoline 🙂

Right now this is my favorite thing in his big boy room:

Remember our impromptu trip to the beach? Remember how I forgot my camera and instead of mourning, I improvised with my phone…and the pictures turned out terrible:

But again I chose not to cry and instead convinced my incredibly talented mother-in-law to paint a picture of it??  The framed jewel above is the fruit of that.  I have to say I am giddy about it.

The plan is to do a somewhat nautical theme in here.  I have plans my dears…BIG plans.  But that will have to wait until another time.  This house has too many projects going on right now 🙂

Little Man’s 3rd Birthday Bash

Yes…it is true. We are parents of a 3 year old…crazy!

We had so much fun celebrating with our little guy this year.

On his birthday I took him to get a special hair cut (Hubby and I usually cut it ourselves, but this local kids salon had a great deal I bought online a couple months back). The salon is ONLY for kids. Its really cool. The kids get to sit in their choice of an airplane, race car, jeep, or train while they get their hair cut. They also get to choose a DVD to watch on a personal little flat screen TV in front of them..(crazy right?) Also they wash and style their hair, put whatever color washable highlights in it at the end, give them a sucker, a balloon, and a animal sticker tattoo. What more could a kid ask for right? I think our Little Man had a blast:

This year we planned a very laid back BBQ at a local park for Little Mans party. Last year, you may remember that we ended up having to cancel his 2nd b-day party when he came down with a fever the morning of the party. So sad…mostly for me. He really had no idea. So we spent a lot of evening praying that God would mercifully give Isaac a healthy body to celebrate his birthday with his friends this year.    And what do you know, he was healthy as a horse this year for his par-tay! He had SO much fun. Take a look:

Easter Egg Hunting

Easter was very very laid back this year. We spent most of the day relaxing at home.

We had a little Easter Egg hunt at Hubby’s parents and Little Man had a blast.

There wasn’t much competition…so it was a leisurely hunt.

Doesn’t he really look like such a little MAN?

I could just eat him up.

I mean seriously…he is so cute…

(Gotta love the tennis shoes with the business attire!)

Showin’ them muscles!

I think it is very possible I may have the two most handsome men on earth living under the same roof as me.

And heres a fun little photo shoot with Daddy:

Yes.  Little Man is playing the congas on Hubby’s head.  Boys…

Hope you had a wonderful day, celebrating our risen Lord.  Praise Him!

Easter Week 2011

This year Easter has been particularly fun with Little Man. He is able to absorb so much more this year. He’s also able to participate in fun activities that grow his understanding of Jesus and His sacrifice for us as well as fun activities that are just… well… fun!  Like dying Easter eggs 🙂

This year we Little Man and I took a morning early in the week to make Resurrection Eggs.

Check out how to make your own here.  Each egg has something in it that reminds us of a different moment during the very first ‘Easter week’  that starts with the Last Supper with Jesus and His disciples and ends with the empty tomb.  We just used things from around the house.  We have gone through these at least once a day together.  He’s been so excited about them that anyone who steps foot in our house gets to see them and hear all about them.  Its sweet to see Him excited about it.

Today we dyed Easter eggs for the first time.

Below is a little slide show of some pictures of this event.  He had a blast!

This Easter has been so much fun with our little guy getting so big!

What a fun little man I have 🙂
